Today was Labor day, the marking of the end of summer, but what better way to go out than the annual West Indian day parade. The revelers started to form as early as 8:30-9:00 AM. My friend and sorority sister asked if I along with others would walk with her down the parade route in support of her run for City Council. We met as early as 9:30 AM and the floats and everyone who was partaking in the parade was there.
11:30 I stood and watch as a calvary of black cars raced by along with an enormous entourage of police officers in plain clothes and uniform scurried by with the Mayor in in his pink sweater tow . From there the parade was in full swing. Politicians and future politicians alike marched waving their banners, placards and posters of themselves reminding everyone that the primary election is less than a week away.

We marched, cheered and danced down Eastern Parkway, which is usually a very busy thoroughfare on any given day. The site is one to behold, the smell of all that wonderful made your mouth water and eager to taste all the wonderful food the Caribbean island has to offer. By mid-afternoon the parade was well underway with all the beautiful costumes and the sounds of reggae and calypso music blaring from the numerous floats... The parade usually goes well into the evening finally winding down around 6:30-7:00 PM. By then you are spent, from all the cheering, dancing and eating you have done throughout the day.
If you have never experienced the West Indian day parade, I would highly recommend you doing so at least once. It is an experience you will not soon forget.
